Popularity of TV Thrillers


-             Breaking bad

The target audience of breaking bad are adults primarily aged 18-49, especially interested in film dramas with mature themes and complex character arcs. This made it more appealing to viewers with more life experience. While breaking bad was enjoyed by both men and women, it had a notably lager male audience. The audience leaned towards those who appreciated complex storytelling, morally ambiguous characters and fans of psychological drama, with elements of dark humour. The show became a cultural phenomenon, being widely regarded as one of the greatest tv shows of all time, with numerous awards, a dedicated fan base and widespread recognition.

 The audience appreciated this show due to the complex characters, for example the ambiguity of Walters character, and the evolution of his relationship with Jesse Pinkman, created a compelling emotional anchor for the series. The cinematic quality and attention to detail also caught the audience’s eye when watching the show with its high production value and the colour palettes drew in audiences who appreciated films and visual storytelling.

 

 

-             Stranger things

The target audience of stranger things are teens and young adults primarily aged 13-34, the series nostalgic references to 1980s pop culture along with its coming-of-age elements make it especially appealing to millennials and gen z. however, it also attracts older viewers who grew up in the 80s. the shows gender distribution is balanced, though some people suggest that it leans towards a slightly female audience. The viewers are mainly fans of sci-fi and supernatural elements. It became one of Netflix’s most watched and talked about series, drawing massive viewership.

The audience appreciated this show due to its nostalgic appeal with its retro 80s aesthetic including cultural references and 80s music, something audiences hadn’t seen before. In addition, the characters played a huge role in stranger things’ success. The exploration of friendships and relationships enticed many audiences.

-             Sherlock

The target audience of sherlock is mystery enthusiasts, adults and fans of British dramas with and intellectual edge. Sherlock has been hugely popular both in the UK and internationally, with a huge fanbase. The show received high ratings and several awards and is popular among those who enjoy clever mysteries and sharp dialogue. Sherlock became a national phenomenon for many reasons. One of these being its strong social media presence. Fans used platforms like Twitter to share their theories, and fan-created content. Hashtags like #Sherlock, #SherlockHolmes, and #Cumberbatch were used to discuss the show, share fan art, and dissect episodes in real-time.

Sherlocks appeal to the media and its ability to creatively market the show and appeal to both traditional fans of the detective genre and new viewers led to the popularity and recognition that it now has today.

Ideas For My Thriller Series

  Idea 1: My first idea is to create a thriller poster based on a girl that went missing during her childhood and based on clues and evidence, her family is trying to find her. The plot twist is that her dad kidnapped her, but her family are unaware of this. My poster will include a missing poster on a lamppost near to a dark forest, with the dad behind with a secretive and sly facial expression. Key colours will include red for the ‘missing’ text with dim lighting. The title will be ‘lost’ and will be aimed at 16–25-year-old tv thriller fans.
