Financial Success of TV Thrillers

 

Breaking bad

Netflix is believed to have paid around 300 million dollars to acquire the rights to stream breaking bad in 2018. Furthermore, the show sold over 5 million units across DVD and Blu-ray sales by 2014, which contributed to substantial revenue. In terms of merchandising, the series also made significant income with sales equating to 10’s of millions of dollars.

In the final season of breaking bad, it had an average of around 10.3 million viewers per episode; the show gained a massive cult following, leading to its success on streaming platforms and creating a significant fanbase even years after the series concluded.

 

Stranger things

The budget for each season of stranger things is estimated to be around 8-10 million dollars per episode. As time went on, this had increased to a 270-million-dollar budget for the whole of season 4. While Netflix does not publicly announce exact earnings from shows, stranger things is regarded the most successful film on the platform. Season 4 was streamed for over 1.3 billion hours in the first 28 days of being released. The show also gained many sales through partnerships, clothing lines and action figures which generated them millions in revenue.

Stranger things has accumulated more than 50 million subscribers who watched at least 2 minutes of the series, which led it to be the most watch English show on Netflix, surpassing previous records held by any other show.

 

Sherlock

Sherlock was initially produced for BBC one, but its success led to deals all around the world. The series was sold to networks and streaming services, which led each episode to be a huge global success. While not as extensive as stranger things or breaking bad, sherlock still had minimal success in merchandising with books based on the show with many of the main actors gaining income from this global appeal. There were special episodes released in cinemas which sparked viewership and added to their additional revenue.

The show had an average viewership of around 8-11million per episode in the UK. It gained a massive global fanbase, with episodes being viewed across lots of countries like the US, China, and more, contributing to its immense popularity on streaming platforms.
